Winter Activities

Ice skating and hockey are now available in Read Park at the ice skating rink located adjacent to the Read Park Family Aquatic Center. Skaters can enjoy a lighted ice skating facility, weather permitting. Ice rink is for shared use for general skating and ice hockey. When general skaters are present, hockey is restricted to West half of ice rink. Click on the raindrop by the search bar for the latest updates on ice conditions.

Thursday nights will be reserved for ice hockey the Read Park Ice Rink from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. General skating will be closed at this time to accommodate full rink hockey. There is no cost to participate, but waivers must be signed prior to playing. Youth under the age of 18 must have a parent signed waiver to participate.  Waivers can be obtained at the Park District Office during regular business hours.

Krape Park continues to be one of the most popular destinations for sledding. The sled hill is located near the Koenig Amphitheater in Krape Park. Click on the raindrop by the search bar for updates on sledding conditions.  Sledding enthusiasts are required to follow posted rules and guidelines of the Freeport Park District.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are low impact workouts and an opportunity for some outdoor winter fun!  Oakdale Nature Preserve and Krape Park are great locations to partake in both activities.

Cross-country skis and snowshoes are available to pick up and drop off at the Park District Administration Center in Read Park.

The office is currently open by appointment only. Please call the office at  815-235-6114 to set up a time to pick up rental equipment.

Cross-country skis, poles and boots are available in a variety of sizes.  They are available on first come, first serve basis.
