Stephenson County Historical Society Museum has something of interest for anyone interested in local history: a beautiful destination well worth discovering.

A beautiful, 3-acre arboretum with gardens to stroll through.

  • Oscar Taylor mansion built in 1857, chronicles early life in Freeport.
  • Irish homestead log cabin built in 1840’s.
  • Millerburg one-room school house.
  • The Museum of Industrial Heritage showcases the manufacturing history of Freeport and Stephenson County.
  • National Museum of Arcade Toys features the world’s largest collection made by Freeport’s famous Arcade Manufacturing Company.
  • Museum gift shop featuring Rawleigh products, books on local subjects, and Freeport souvenir items.
  • A resource library filled with books, papers, and photographs related to local history (open Monday-Thursday by appointment only).

Hours & Operation

Thursday through Friday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Last tour begins at 1:30 pm. Saturday & Sunday, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Last tour begins at 2:30 pm. (Subject to change-check their website). Additional times available by appointment. Group tours are available.

Admission: Full tour $8 adults; $4 children (6-12 years).

Taylor House or Toy Museum only: $6 adults; $3 children (6-12 years).
